Most Philadelphus are pretty ordinary shrubs when not in flower, this one is the exception. The spring flowers have a heady fragrance that can manifest itself a long way from its origin but the real and lasting beauty is its gold foliage.
As with most gold foliage plants it needs protection during the heat of the day. If given too much sun gold foliage plants tend to turn a sickly yellow colour but set in a position with around 4 hours morning sun they can be sublime. The gold foliage glows in partial shade.
Coronarius aureus can be a big shrub. It can potentially reach 2.5-3 metres but its not a fast grower and is very amenable to pruning.
