Phymosia is a member of the Malvaceae family so in with Abutilon and hollyhocks. I fail to understand why this shrub is not more widely grown in Australian gardens, its big leaves alone would be enough for me. The flowering season is long and I suspect in warmer parts would be continuous, deep red upward facing flowers about 10cm diameter.
Phymosia requires shelter but is equally happy in sun or part shade, it is very tough and once established requires no watering, in Melbourne anyway. Its a sub tropical shrub so may react to frost but flourishes here in Olinda as well as in Melbourne gardens.
Around 3,5 meters high with a loosely upright habit and responds very well to pruning so would make a great informal hedge.
My plants are cutting grown from last spring so not large
