All Mahonia have been moved into the genus Berberis. Aquifolium var.moseri is a small one growing to only 1.5 metre and sucking to make a thicket. The flowering period is winter and if its cold enough its foliage turns a deep red which contrasts beautifully with the yellow flowers. New growth is a yellow orange colour.
Like most of the Mahonia (now Berberis) it likes to be grown in shade either partial or full.

Not a plant for the impatient, this Berberis is very slow growing. Its an absolute beauty for the shade garden
