There is a vast array of Salvia available some very good plants others not so much. Phyllis fancy is a classic, its common and for good reason. Its Leucantha parentage makes this a tough plant in either full sun or part shade. The sage green foliage is attractive and mauve flowers start in late spring and continue through until autumn. In hot districts it may take a break from flowering in the heat of summer. The flowers are a favourite for pollinators both insects and birds. Like all salvia Phyllis fancy requires some maintenance. I cut it too the ground in mid spring then cut it in half early summer. This treatment will delay flowering but ensures a strong and thick clump. It has the capacity to reach 2m and will with time make very big clumps.
