Fatshedera is an intergeneric cross between Fatsia Japonica and Hedera helix which is common ivy. This plant was bred in France in 1910. It is a very tough plant for the shade garden where it can be grown as a shrub to about 2m, a semi climber on the fence or as a low spreading ground cover. I grow mine as the later and find the big palmate leaves a nice contrast when paired with Astelia and Epimedium. Fatshedera has been a little slow to establish but once that happens its growth rate increases. It has none of the weed characteristics from its Ivy parent.
Fatshedera can also be grown as an indoor plant and will tolerate quite low light levels
